The Difference Between Article A, An and The
What is an article? Basically, an
article is an adjective. Like adjectives, articles modify nouns.
English has
two articles: the and a/an. The is used to refer to specific or particular
nouns; a/an is used to modify non-specific or non-particular nouns. We call the
the definite article and a/an the indefinite article.
What is an article?
An article is a noun that carries the article with it. The article can be like a set of
can openers, or more complex. For example, the American English practice of
dropping the article before the word “the”. For the Canadian Parliament’s
website, the official title is Canadian House of Commons. It isn’t just their
website. Their email address is also HouseOfCommons@parl.gc.ca. This means that
Canadians don’t speak or write about the U.S. Congress as if it were the House
of Representatives; they use the plural form (the House of Representatives).
Both English and Chinese use article and article a/an to modify nouns. Both languages
use determiners (i.e. different forms of the same word, used together) to
modify nouns.
The Definite Article
Definite article is used for very specific nouns; is used for relative pronouns; is used
to refer to nouns or other objects; is used to refer to a person or place; is
used to refer to a state, country, etc. The Indefinite Article is used to
describe a state of affairs, which is not necessarily specific or particular.
Is is an article, usually used as a noun, for articles like and , the, when, for,
to, for example.
There are
four main types of indefinite articles: singular indefinite, dual indefinite,
dual declarative, and dual indefinite. Each is distinct in its use. They share
one thing in common: they never modify a noun. They never say "a
dog," for example. They always say "the dog." The plural
indefinite article, the singular indefinite, and the dual definite form their
nouns with a different form of a/an, called "person/thing/object."
That is, "the pen" would become the plural indefinite "pen"
rather than "the pen." "The pen" "The pen"
"The pen" The Singular Indefinite The use of singular indefinite
articles follows these rules: All nouns require an article to be plural.
Wikipedia uses articles to describe the subject of a sentence. English has two articles: the and a/an. They are used to modify specific and particular nouns and to indicate that one noun has been modified by another noun. More specifically, articles are used in: Word meanings, Pronouns, Adjectives and Nouns. Part 8: Pronouns Pronouns are words or phrases used to refer to someone, a place, or an action. Most of us use pronouns everyday, like “you” and “you”. The word “you” is just a pronoun. “You” is a verb used to refer to a specific individual. To use “you” as a pronoun, just add the suffix –“ing” to the noun. Pronouns are placed before the noun to which they refer.
